Review
Loudness is one of the best metal bands ever, most of their albums are awesome, but their best album is definitely The Law Of Devil's Land, but its not only their best album, its also one of the best metal albums ever! Its a shame that its so unknown outside of Japan because I'm sure that if it was well known, most of the metal fans would consider it to be one of the best metal albums ever!
First of all, I think that its important to mention that Akira Takasaki is an awesome guitarist, he's very skilled, he's probably the best guitarist from Japan, so I'd like to say straight away that this album is full of awesome riffs and solos!
Its very hard to describe the overall sound of the album, its very heavy (for its time), but its also very progressive in some parts, some songs remind of bands like Iron Maiden and Judas Priest, some others remind of early Rush and I could go on... The sound is pretty unique I guess because I have never heard anything that really sounded like it.
Anyway, let's talk about the songs... The album starts with Theme of Loudness, its an intro and I usually skip intros, they're usually totally useless, but I never skip this one because I love it, it starts with a nice riff that reminds of the main riff from Rush's Limelight, then you have a great verse and finally, you have a very catchy chorus (that a lot of "true" metal fans would probably find too happy, but personally, I love it) that gets repeated until the end... Its a great intro and I wish it was longer. The first song, In The Mirror, is a classic Loudness song and its easy to understand why, its filled with great riffs, its catchy, it has a great solo (like I said earlier, the album is full of awesome solos), its great all the way through and its not even one of the best songs on the album. The next song is called Show Me the Way and, like In The Mirror, its filled with great riffs, but even better ones... I Wish You Were Here is the most mainstream sounding song on the album, but that's not a bad thing at all because its a really good song, its very catchy, I really love the bass on it, its not complex, but it sounds great, in fact, its the best thing about it, it just makes you want to move! The next song, Mr. Yes Man, is one of the best songs on the album, it sounds a lot like a Rush song in parts, I mean, it has a couple of riffs (mostly the intro, the pre-chorus and even the solo) that sound like riffs that Alex Lifeson could have written... The best thing about this song is the chorus, its really catchy and Minoru's vocals during it sound great (they sound great on every song, actually)! The title track is one of the best songs on the album, the main riff is really cool and unique, the verses are very good, the chorus is really nice, its not very catchy, but there's something really nice about it, and finally, the solo is awesome! Black Wall is very melodic and its filled with awesome guitar work. Sleepless Night is the weakest song on the album, but its not bad at all, in fact, its great, but its just not as great as the other songs... The last song, Speed, is the best song on the album, its also one of Loudness's best songs and its also one of the best metal songs ever! It really has an appropriate title because its very fast (for its time) and very heavy. The main riff is one of the best riffs I've ever heard, its awesome, everything about the song is awesome, but the best part is the chorus (which is the intro riff with vocals), I can't really describe it, I mean, its very catchy, but not in an happy way, its very catchy in an heavy way if that makes any sense...
Get this album right now! If you like great heavy metal, then you will love this album! I also highly recommend Disillusion, Thunder In The East and Lightning Strikes from the same band. If you want something even heavier (much more heavier actually), then I recommend Spiritual Canoe and Racing.
Best songs (In case you were too lazy to read the review): Speed, Mr. Yes Man, The Law of Devil's Land, Show Me the Way and Black Wall. I'd add I Wish You Were Here, but a lot of`"true" metal fans won't like it.
