Review
Disillusion is one of the best albums of Loudness and a pioneer work in the whole Asian metal scene. After a solid first strike and two records that copied too much the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal, Loudness deliver an album filled with catchy and diversified tracks. They are all killers and there's not a single filler to find. It's a pure pleasure to listen to this record and while you listen to it time passes by so quickly that you are stunned when this brilliant record is already over after forty short and intense minutes.
Loudness deliver everything they stand for on this album. After a great epic intro with bell and chime sounds, the band kicks off with a catchy traditional heavy metal track in the key of Iron Maiden which is "Crazy Doctor". Already the next track takes you by surprise, though. "Esper" is a pitiless, fast and energizing track with a big influence from the punk and early thrash metal scene. This track turns out to be one of the greatest early thrash metal tracks of all times only a few months after the first small successes of the future legend Metallica. This underlines the highly underrated and infamous pioneer status of this visionary Japanese metal band. Loudness also prove that they can play any subgenre of rock and metal music with the outstanding "Butterfly" that sounds like Rush in its best years. Any fan pf progressive rock and metal music will adore this piece of music filled with emotional vocals, catchy and dreamy riffs and an incredible drum work.
The great thing is that the band is able to carry on this high degree of quality throughout the entire record. They vary just enough to always remain interesting and surprising while always sounding coherent and focused. One highlight follows the other with amazing songs like "Milky Way" with its catchy riffs and amazing vocals that sound a lot like X Japan's Toshi many years before this band even got its breakthrough in the end of the eighties. This also proves how influential and important this band has been in its country. The album finished with the epic metal ballad "Ares Lament". If you like ballads from Scorpions or Lizzy Borden, this track is definitely your new bible.
In the end, this album is a pleasure for the ears of any fan of rock or metal music. The band kept some Western influences but worked on their very unique sound as well. The sound quality of the record is not the best but the quality, diversity and catchiness of the songs are so enjoyable that this doesn't even count in my final verdict. Apart of Iron Maiden's Powerslave, this record is definitely the best heavy metal record of the year 1984. Don't miss the chance to listen to this lost pearl and a very complete and perfectly executed time document of the rock and metal music of the early and mid eighties.
